About The Black Horse Restaurant & Bar

toptable Dining Awards 2010 - Runner-up: Best for Value and Under £25.

Appleby Magna – cute in name, cute in nature – offers a thoroughly appropriate pub and restaurant. In a slightly off-kilter sixteenth century grade II listed building The Black Horse is a typical village pub thanks to lovingly restored original features yet is free from old man with dog on string status thanks to a thoroughly contemporary style of furnishing and a relaxed, warm atmosphere. The emphasis here is quite simply on fantastic real ales which will turn even the most feminine of spritzer drinkers and food of a very high quality. Using much locally sourced and organic produce the modern European dishes change with the seasons.

Signature dish

Crispy belly of Lovetts pork, fondant potato, Savoy cabbage, cider jus.

Sample dishes

  • Freshly made soup of the day, crusty bread, £3.50
  • Ballotine of chicken, black puding and spinach, ruby port jus
  • Chocolate and Baileys mousse with orange compote, £4.50

Reviewer Jonathan Carrigan  -  gourmet

The Black Horse restaurant is a small room away from the village pub bar which seats 10-12 covers. The menu was varied and the portions were of a good size and were very attractively presented. We ate an excellent 5* meal for 3* money and cannot recommend the place highly enough.
